Does eschatology matter? Sort of.

We do our part. The Gods do theirs. We make the best of how things work out.

  1. I think one of my favorite things about AI is that it’s just smart enough to make an image but not smart enough to make all of the details make sense. Like in the picture with all of the Gods. Why is Krishna holding His flute like a spear? I like how some of the Gods are pretty recognizable but then you have ones who are just generic looking people that could be someone but there’s nothing about them except that they’re kinda slowly and ancient looking.

Not trying to distract from the conversation. I just think it’s a funny image

    1. I wouldn’t assume that Krishna’s flute couldn’t be used belligerently. Isn’t he called “the Tyrant of the Flute?” Consider the Rat-Catcher of Hamlin. That said, I agree about AI art. But on the other hand it takes direction and it’s probably not going to rape children creating a moral quandary about whether the art can be separated from such an artist, particularly when sacred icons were commissioned and the piece of shit did the covers to half of my books. I mean, it’s totally not personal. I’m just making a theoretical philosophical point. But you’re not wrong about AI art. It’s weird and soulless. Which captures something of the zeitgeist. So I’m going to use it for the time being. Consider the art the Symbolists, Dadaists, and Absurdists were into. Brilliant philosophy, ugly as fuck art. Compared to that weird and soulless isn’t so bad. And maybe it’s just a different kind of intelligence, no different than a dolphin, a dog, a tree, a rock, a human, an ancestor, a spirit, a God, a kosmos. I’m an animast as well as a polytheist.

      1. So regarding Krishna, it would appear He prefers much more conventional weapons when in combat. Doesn’t seem to be any reference to Him using it to cause harm. Though I’m sure He could if He wanted to. It’s just not what He has used it for (though I’ll let you know if I ever see such an instance).

I’m not knocking the art. I just think it looks like it hasn’t truly mastered illustration yet. But I’m sure in a few years they’ll patch that. It’s truly interesting to think what the world will look like when I am an old man. No doubt I will desperately praying that Lord Kalki comes already to end all of this madness that is the Kali Yuga

        1. It’s progressing at an impressively rapid speed. A couple years it was giving people 6 fingers and gibberish in the background. Now Boomers can’t tell the difference. Soon neither will Zoomers.

  2. —> this: ““Why did Dionysos allow this?” It’s “how do I fulfill my God’s expectations of me in these changed circumstances?”” right here. this is Odinic logic too, or maybe just clean devotional logic. it is also a very different way of approaching theodicy.

    1. I’ve invested much of my previous “free time” in seeking and understanding where “my place” is so I can “remember” it. One of the insights came through the Raidho-Jera-Tiwaz bindrune which I associate with Time-Tide-Task. “Task” feels right but my head has trouble wrapping itself around how it fits within the bindrune.  “…how do I fulfill my God’s expectations of me in these changed circumstances?” contains it nicely. There are several things I can do – which is mine to do/mine to let pass to another.

      1. Exactly! And that’s such a vital thing to discern. Because if you don’t do the thing you were destined to, a gap is created. Maybe someone else will step in and do that work (but not as well as you could have) or maybe no one will, and that gap will remain, weakening the whole chain.

        1. The other side of that coin is equally true – if I intercede, because I can, not because it is my role/task – do I introduce an impediment, change a direction, or in general, snarl things up. I loathe the “not my job” and resent the “above my pay grade” responses, especially when my head says I have the skill set and the task needs doing now. Stay connected with the Gods, “ping” Andvari, confirm that Raidho-Jera-Tiwaz favors the action before proceeding.

          1. Oh Gods. That’s one of the hardest things to do. Sit back, when you know you could make a difference. But do you have the understanding to know whether that difference is positive or negative?

  3. Is not the end of the world a cycle that is needed to bring about a new one? It appears in Mesoamerican mythology as making new worlds. Anyway, that is probably off tangent.

As for end times, if memory services me, the Greeks had it before the Christians, who took it and ran away with it.

    1. That’s the problem. According to Orphism there is this constantly repeating cycle. Everything spills out of the Egg. We have six or seven successive kingships by the Gods. Everything shrinks back down into an egg. And the cycle begins again. It’s good. It’s natural. The end of one cycle provides the essential stuff the subsequent cycle needs.

The unmaker, the nameless, the nothing wants to interrupt that process. Unmake and consume all things. It has nasty, powerful but ultimately stupid things helping it.

      Dionysos wants to stop that.

      1. Let me understand – the process of the cycle is good but the nothing wants to consume everything, and end everything. Dionysos wants to stop the nothing. Ok?

Are there other Gods involved with stopping the nothing? What stupid things are helping the nothing?

        1. There’s a host of Gods who are actively preparing us for what’s coming, and fighting the war preemptively. Or in the early stages. Like with Ukraine. Most people would say that it began with Russia’s invasion in 2022. People on the street know that it was really 2014 with the Maidan protests and invasion of the “little green men”, and hostile pressure applied even before then. Then there are those with a true grasp of history who would probably say it began in the 13th-14th century with the Muscovites as shock troops of the Golden Horde trying to take out the Kievan Rus.

Think about that phrase a bunch of polytheists and neopagans started getting from their Gods and spirits around 2010-2014. “The storm is coming.” “The war is on the horizon” “Stand against the darkness.” “Tower time is almost here.” That was the people willing to talk about it publicly.

I’ve communicated with pagans from the 90s and even a couple from the 80s. They were talking about the same thing, using remarkably similar language. In much more hushed tones, because they were living under the specter of the Satanic Panic, so presentability politics mattered a whole Hell of a lot more. But amongst themselves? There were whispers.

Then you’ve got the massive spike in increase of demonic and other supernatural activity. Polytheists and neopagans are reporting it. Charismatic Evangelicals are reporting it. The Vatican is reporting it. Even psychologists are reporting it, though they don’t understand the phenomenon they are seeing, or its true causes, just how it affects their patients and poll-takers.

One can explain this as a societal response to increasing pressures and divisiveness. Or the paranoia and appeal of conspiracy theories among marginalized groups. Or even a case of collective insanity.

Except that groups that have nothing to do with one another, don’t socialize in the meat world or share online fora, are repeating the same messages, the same experiences. And when you’ve had those experiences yourself all the frantic hand-waving in the world isn’t going to convince you that what you just dealt with was an internet trope or mass psychological response to industrialization and isolation, or however this or that scholar wants to explain it away. I can tell you that while I’ve been dealing with this shit since my teenage years, I saw a massive spike in the 2010s, until here we are.

So yeah, I definitely think a lot of other Gods and spirits are aware. Maybe the Olympians are too, but they’re convinced the situation can be handled without posing a threat to their rule.

I don’t know what will happen after, if Dionysos will be the sole ruler from Nysa, or whether we’re going to see a number of reformed pantheons with different members and different rulers. I suspect the second, especially since I’m a Dionysian and therefore it makes sense that what I’d be shown are the things pertaining to how he’s handling the crisis. He could just be a king, not the Cosmic King. That last interpretation is an attempt to reconcile what I’ve seen with Orphic literature which presents Dionysos as the successor of Zeus and a sequence of 6 or 7 Kosmokrateres, beginning with Phanēs who peacefully passed the scepter to his daughter/wife Nyx, then a bunch of conflicts culminating in the rules of Zeus and Dionysos. Some fragments suggest they are distinct and successive reigns, others that they will occur simultaneously, with Dionysos manifesting the will of Zeus. It’s especially difficult since Orphism was never a unified “church” but a movement of distinct strains, some promulgated by itinerant religious specialists others by philosophers or poets, but all claiming inspiration from the oracular severed head of Orpheus.

I spent close to 13 books trying to make sense of the visions I was given, parsing out who would be on Dionysos’ side and who wouldn’t. (And whether that just meant they were going to fight on their own as opposed to part of his coalition.) And then I stopped, realizing it didn’t matter. Whether the war occurs in our lifetime or not, the people are going to need competent, trained religious specialists to deal with things on the human level. It’s not my job to battle Eurymedon. Thank the Gods, because he’d probably squash me in an instant. What Dionysos showed me was the need to create the Starry Bull and train competent successors, because they will be needed. The rest was just the backdrop.

          1. While reading this, I had a sudden flash about W.T. Sherman and The Mothman. Both are preparing the rest of us for the horrors that are coming. In other words, pay attention, and batten down the hatches.

            1. This is a great comment, but I just have to say “W.T. Sherman and The Mothman” would make an awesome name for a band. I don’t know why but I’m thinking ska or swing?
