I used to dig a bunch of Neil Diamond songs but hesitated to call myself a fan outright because he’s, well, a little corny … but then I started paying attention to writer credits on songs and realized that a bunch of the music from the 70s and 80s that I loved was by him, even if recorded by other acts, and that got me over any lingering hesitancy. The man’s a fucking genius, no matter how corny he can be at times. Hell, his willingness to explore those emotions makes him even more badass.
So many great singer-songwriters from that period … Neil Diamond, Kris Kristofferson, Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, Terry Reid — not to mention Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Ian Curtis.
Hell, I’m even into Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr – which would probably come as a surprise considering the normal stuff I post here. :D
I love old Neil Diamond and am surprised and delighted to see these posts.
Holly Holy is my favorite Dionysos song. The trills of ecstasy!
