I remember seeing this movie when I was younger and it remains one of my favorites. My favorite scene was after all his character went through, he came back to mend ties with his Father (due to his marrying a Non-Jewish girl), and it crystalized during Yom Kippur and he came to sing the Kol Nidre. Very Powerful!

I forgot how beautiful that song was. Combined with your description it brought a tear to my eye. Definitely need to rewatch it.
