During the Persian War the great Athenian hero Themistokles made a special offering to his God Dionysos:
Themistokles was sacrificing alongside the admiral’s trireme and three prisoners of war were brought to him, of visage most beautiful to behold, conspicuously adorned with raiment and with gold. They were said to be the sons of Sandauké, the king’s sister, and Artaÿktos. When Euphrantides the seer caught sight of them, since at one and the same moment a great and glaring flame shot up from the sacrificial victims and a sneeze gave forth its good omen on the right, he clasped Themistokles by the hand and bade him consecrate the youths, and sacrifice them all to Dionysos Omestes (Carnivorous), with prayers of supplication; for on this wise would the Hellenes have a saving victory. Themistokles was terrified, feeling that the word of the seer was monstrous and shocking; but the multitude, who, as is wont to be the case in great struggles and severe crises, looked for safety rather from unreasonable than from reasonable measures, invoked the God with one voice, dragged the prisoners to the altar, and compelled the fulfilment of the sacrifice, as the seer commanded. At any rate, this is what Phanias the Lesbian says, and he was a philosopher, and well acquainted with historical literature. (Plutarch, Life of Themistokles 13.2-3)
It’s been a while since pious polytheists could emulate him in this. However a reader brought to my attention an unique opportunity that’s presented itself thanks to the genocidal conflict Putin and his cronies are waging in the Ukraine – signmyrocket.com. This is a site run by Ukrainians who are willing to write whatever message you want on munitions that’ll be launched at the marauding Russian forces – such as, “I consecrate these deaths to Dionysos and his Retinue” for instance. You can choose from a range of weapons, including everything from bullets and grenades on up to Howitzers and more. (And if you just want to support the Ukrainian forces who are nobly defending their homeland there are a bunch of non-lethal options too – but either way the money raised will be going to help wounded veterans.)
According to my reader you need to carefully follow instructions or this could get flagged. First make your selection on the site and click “way to pay” and “fire.” Then, and this is very important, take down your donation number and email support@signmyrocket.com inquiring how to pay via PayPal, and you’ll get a response in a day or so providing instructions. Follow them to the letter. Send your PayPal donation to the address provided marked as “friends and family” and when it’s ready you’ll get a picture and possibly a video of your sacrifice in action.
Not only will this act help feed our hungry Gods (and the deaths can be consecrated to divinities other than Dionysos should you be so inclined) but you’ll be helping the Ukrainians take out some of the baby-raping and grandma-murdering Russian swine, which benefits everybody.
Hail to Odin. What a lovely, truly lovely idea. thank you for sharing it. I saw a Ukrainian news report on this, where someone had donated toward a rather large shell and the picture showed the word “bonk” written on it, which made me laugh. I don’t think it would have occurred to me that this site could be used for offerings though. I like it.

There’s a few Gods I think it would be cool to do this for but I can’t donate that much at a time right now so I think I’m going to donate once a month for a few months. The ones I’m definitely thinking of are Dionysos, Artemis, Ares, and Odin. I think Athena too might enjoy this as She also received human sacrifices but a part of me is concerned since that was under a specific circumstance (to my understanding). This is definitely one for divination!

When in doubt, divine!

Can we put this in our session tomorrow or do you need another $13?

It’s a separate issue/question so you’ll have to reserve another slot.

As a diviner, I have to say, jumping to a serious topic like sacrifice or a particularly potent offering …well, it’s something best done on its own, Guason. It is that important. I wouldn’t mix it with any other questions.

Yeah, I thought about it (because my instinct is to say “hey, I’m already divining”) and it really deserves to be its own question.

EXCELLENT rule of thumb. :)

Any Gods in particular who accept humqn sacrifices you recommend? Aside from Dionysos, Gods like Artemis, Ares, Athena, and Odin come to mind.

maybe one of the heroes – Achilles (and Patrokles) because of Snake Island…but I’d ask Sannion about it to be sure it’s appropriate. For this type of offering, Morrigan also would be appropriate, though I don’t know that She has any particular interest in Ukraine–although there ARE Irish volunteers there. oh, and Freya is a Goddess of War as much as of love so it wouldn’t be inappropriate there either. BUT I’d always suggest divining before making any type of offering like this though, to make sure the Deity in question wants it AND that it’s appropriate for you personally (and this holds for anyone, not just you personally but me, sannion, Jane doe, John Doe, etc.) to make such an offering. That last answer can vary considerably depending on a number of things.

Achilles crossed my mind. I’ll have to see. Maybe I’ll just slip Sannion another $13 and he can tell me tomorrow which one of our Holy Powers wants a taste of long pig

Ah my friend, this is a terrible thing. this opportunity exists because families, children, whole regions are being slaughtered. I can not bring myself to joke about such a thing. But I think divining on it is an excellent idea. Achilles was the second to my mind and strongly.

My apologies. I was trying to use a euphemism because I didn’t want someone reporting this post. I don’t think this is a funny situation at all. You probably know this already but “long pig” comes from Polynesia and is what some of the tribes allegedly called human flesh for consumption

Definitely something to keep in mind with this.

Good suggestions, especially Achilles. I might add Sobek and Sekhmet to that list.

I was thinking it might be something Sekhmet would appreciate as well.

But as was said above, I’d perform divination to determine whether such an offering is desired first before proceeding.

I know. I like knowing the origin of words. :)
and for those appalled at the idea of dedicating weapons, there are other things one can offer. I posted a whole list ages ago (i think one can just search Ukraine tag on my site) with all the places one can donate medical supplies, or toward food, shelter, medical care. There are even places one can donate to help feed and house pets that have been rescued. But yeah…never occurred to me some asshat would report this. But there are those who would just because it’s sannion (regardless of content).
I still think SignMyRocket is *brilliant*.

There’s an increasingly persistent rhetoric in the community now against even animal sacrifice so I have no doubt this will cause a scandal. To be fair though, it’d at least be based on something we genuinely said and upheld. I’d rather be accused of dedicating weapons than being a racist or any of the other horrible things people have accused us of.

animal sacrifice is an essential and key sacrament in our polytheisms. One may choose not to participate and that is fine; but those who screech and whine and moan about how animal sacrifice is bad are misguided, unread, and in many cases impious, not to mention flat out wrong. I’m done pretending otherwise.

I 100% agree. To be fair, they don’t seem to say it’s wrong completely but rather that it’s obsolete and shouldn’t be brought back. They’re still wrong of course but it seems the focus of their argument has changed

It has been brought back. It’s been happening by trained sacrificial priests for at least a generation now. So really, the nay sayers need to go back to LARPing or their marxist crap or whatever doesn’t involve polluting pious spaces.

and what does it matter what the impious call you? They’ve called me racist, nazi, all manner of things. I know I am not. those who are capable of reading my work know I’m not, and most importantly of all, my Gods know I’m not. What do the words of fools mean?

Oh they don’t mean anything. It’s still a little upsetting though. I tried to actually do something for the community and they backstabbed me. I tried to give them something most others weren’t and they backstabbed me. And they did it for a bevy of reasons that are run the gamut from being inane down to just flat out morally wrong. I guess I never realized how awful these people really are. How in desperate need of good morals we are. I know in the end it doesn’t matter but it’s never not going to bother me

part of the problem is lack of character. modernity and its values do not build any. You can’t take it personally. do your best by your Gods, and do what you can to be a decent human being and to cultivate character. it’s the only curative. (because the values of modernity do not accord with piety or devotion or even in some cases decency. this is why so many of these people turn to marxism. they think that’s better — not because they’re stupid. they’re not, though their historical education may be lacking, but because on some level I think they sense the inequity, the way modernity reduces us to labor units, the way it dehumanizes and are looking for a curative. Of course I would say returning to one’s ancestral polytheisms and cultivating virtue and devotion is how we make things better but it takes time to really see that). When you start feeling beaten down by the bullshit, Guason, go to your shrines and just sit and pray. Ask the Gods to restore you. Ask for Their blessings. It will come.

If the Russians went home (and stopped genociding their neighbors) there’d be no cause or opportunity for this, so I don’t see where the scandal is. To me the scandal should be how they are conducting this brutal, unjust and incompetent offensive.

Believe me, Sannion, I am with you 100% on this. Not to mention, these men are getting killed anyways and people are already using the website to advertise themselves on Instagram. What you’re suggesting is ultimately far more decent and respectful than what everyone else is doing.

I’m being real right now. I’d much rather be sacrificed to one of our Gods than be killed in an ad for some girl’s twerking videos or some three-bit wannabe gangster trying to be the next Post Malone. Hands down. No contest. I’d let you lead me to the altar right now if that’s how it had to be!

I agree. I would a thousand times rather lay my life down for my Gods than anything this culture has to offer. part of learning piety — which I think we’re all constantly doing — is learning to prioritize properly. but agreed: 110%. So, we can sacrifice our lives by living in ways that serve Them, by working to restore our traditions, and by celebrating our Gods with every prayer and offering opportunity that presents itself. :)
