I love the original, but Gabriel took that song and completely made it his own. I had the same experience with the strings; there may even have been tears.
This song triggered a literal mind-blowing religious experience because I was reading Hermias while listening to it, and the Pythagoreans are totally right about music. Have you heard the Martyn Bennett remix of Peter Gabriel’s “Sky Blue” on FLOTSAM AND JETSAM? It’s really ethereal and makes me think of the Orphic theogonic poems.
