confessions of a gadfly

    1. Oh, come on. Do you think I’d set things up like this just to leave it at that? I have every intention of sharing stories, and maybe even with identifying details (though this is more of a didactic thing than a series of “my colleagues are wicked, stupid or both” kinda exposés.) I will tell you this isn’t just limited to neopagandom and the occult. I’m currently dealing with a case where I advised a woman to seek help from the Catholic church; I expected there might be some hoops for her to jump through, as she has a severe medical condition that might be grounds for exclusion, but they took it seriously and rushed her through the preliminary examination. Unfortunately the conclusion they reached was wrong (affliction rather than possession) and instead of dealing with it in house they referred her to a charismatic evangelical faith healer who did the absolute bare minimum and even that incompetently. (I.e. calling on the Holy Spirit rather than Jesus Christ. If you know anything about exorcism it is a Christological charism, not a Pneumatological one.) This left her still possessed, but now convinced that she’s perfectly fine — even though the erratic behavior and minor supernatural phenomena has persisted. The frustrating thing (beyond the complete failure of the Church) is that I’m in New York and she and her husband, whom I’m continuing to counsel, are in Washington state, and I don’t have a single colleague in the area that I can refer them to, or who can assist me when the time comes to confront this thing. I have both of them reciting prayers and performing minor rites consistent with their faith to keep things from progressing while I gather intelligence and formulate a plan, but needless to say I am not very happy with the Catholic church or the idiot they brought in — which is incomprehensible to me: 1) since when did Catholics start working with Charismatics? and 2) I understand that an exorcism would necessitate bumping it up the hierarchical chain, but any parish priest worth his blessed salt ought to have been able to perform the deliverance rite/house blessings this fool did, so why outsource it? Thankfully I performed a successful healing on them before this, so the husband trusts me enough to follow my advice or this situation could have turned into a complete clusterfuck.

      1. yeah, this one has been a real pain in the ass for us. It would not have been half as bad if the god damned catholics had done their fucking job. Jesus was, first and foremost on earth, an exorcist after all. They can’t maintain their liturgy. They insult His mother. and they can’t do the ONE THING that he spent most of the gospels doing. wtf.
