More to the point

Both Christians and Pagans may use bone imagery in their worship. But can you spot the subtle difference?

Of course, not all Pagans use plastic crap:

And yet I still prefer the Christian version:

Though I’ll admit the skull of Saint Mendita does kind of creep me out:

  1. I’m still puzzling over why the skeleton of St. Mendita has a head while there is still that head up top. Did she carry a spare?

St. Mendita there looks like she can just tell someone put another skull on her body, and she’s not pleased.

And this reminded me that at some point I need to dig up an old issue of the Fortean Times and scan the article they did on bejeweled skeletons… a good article whipped up to read as sensationalist meringue, of course, but the photographs were beautiful.

    • Weirdly enough, someone just sent me a link to a page on bejewled skeletons. I wonder if they’re the same … or if there’s a whole bunch of fabulous dead folk out there.

Thank you for believing that good taste fucking matters.

Sometimes I imagine the gods looking at the rituals the Pagans do and wincing as you might at the kindergarten end-of-school rehearsal of your developmentally stunted child. “You tried” stars for everybody!

  4. My housemate refers to the tendency of Pagans to use plastic crap as “offering the gods a macaroni picture.” You know, like the kind kids make in elementary school…except we aren’t kids and therefore don’t have that excuse.
